FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Iran Nuclear Agreement from the Perspective of Canadian-Iranians

A survey by the Iranian Canadian Congress reveals strong support for the Iran Nuclear Agreement among Canadian-Iranians.

Toronto, ON – the Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC) conducted an online survey from October 4 to October 8, 2017 to gauge the opinion of the Canadian-Iranians regarding the historic nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 on July 14, 2015, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Results: Respondents overwhelmingly support the Iran Nuclear Agreement.

According to the survey of 1100 Iranian-Canadians, over 90% of the respondents are in support of the Iran Nuclear Agreement. About 95% of the respondents believe that in the event that the US Trump administration withdraws from the nuclear agreement with Iran, the Canadian government should abide by the nuclear agreement and therefore not to follow the US. While Canada is not a party in P5+1, because the deal was ratified in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), all UN members, including Canada, are obliged to abide by the UNSC Resolution 2231. With respect to the positive impact of the nuclear deal on the lives of Iranians, over 80% of respondents believe that the nuclear agreement has positively impacted the lives of Iranian people. About 11% of the respondents were unsure about whether the deal has improved the lives of Iranian people and 7% of the respondents believed that there have been no improvements. Based on comments from respondents some people expected that the sanctions relief after the deal would result into immediate economic improvements; however, in reality the improvements have been slower than initially expected, according to some expert observers. Secondly, some experts believe that the US has not delivered on its promises and its obligations with respect to the deal signed. For example, Iranians still encounter difficulties in accessing the international banking system due to US sanctions.
