Message from the 2014-2015 ICC Board on International Women's Day.
Happy Women's Day
International Women's Day (March 8th) is an occasion to celebrate women's achievements across the globe, and to impress upon society the imperative for gender equity and social justice in our time. The Iranian Canadian Congress joins communities of conscientious women and men from a variety of cultural backgrounds in affirming the universal rights, social and political freedoms, and basic dignity of women and girls in Canada and Iran.
The plight of Iranian women since the inception of the Islamic Republic in Iran is both well-documented and, alas, persisting. The arbitrary and discriminatory legal regime based on aspects of Shari'a provisions have not only specifically targeted women's basic civil and political rights but also imperiled social progress in relations between men and women. Despite considerable obstacles, however, Iranian women's contributions to a more equitable society as well as a democratic state continue apace.
The ICC would like to use the momentous occasion of International Women's Day to celebrate and stand in solidarity with Iranian women across the globe, and especially inside Iran, in their continuing struggles against patriarchal and arbitrary systems of privilege and rule.
