Iranian- Canadians Weigh-In On Nuclear Talks in Vienna
Results of Iranian Canadian Congress survey reveal a majority in favor of a nuclear agreement with Iran.
July 14, 2015. The Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC) has recently completed a survey for its members regarding their opinion about the Iranian nuclear talks and how an agreement to lift the sanctions on Iran could improve the economy of the country as well as the lives of Iranians in Canada.
The ICC questionnaire revealed that a strong majority of respondents (roughly 80%) are in favor of a nuclear agreement with Iran and believe that the agreement will have positive consequences for Iranians living both in Iran and in Canada. “Many Iranian-Canadians feel an agreement is the best opportunity to avoid a devastating war. Also, many of those in favor of a nuclear agreement believe a negotiated deal will lift the sanctions on Iran which will improve the economic well-being of the Iranian people.” Arsalan Kahnemuyipour, the ICC president, said in an interview with Radio Canada last week.
According to the survey, the responses were split regarding the effect of a possible agreement on the human rights condition in Iran. “Some believe that a nuclear agreement will not have any impact on the human rights condition in Iran or will result in a strengthened Islamic Republic of Iran becoming even less considerate of people’s rights. Others believe that the economic benefits will lead to a strengthening of the middle-class, the back bone of any progressive change, ultimately leading to an improvement in individual freedoms and human rights in the country.” Kahnemuyipour adds.
